The Real Property Classification System (RPCS) is a hierarchical scheme of U. S. military real property
types and functions. It is used to identify, categorize, and analyze an inventory of buildings,
structures, linear structures, and land. This system is utilized by the U. S. Department of Defense,
but is also applicable to any organization with a large and diverse inventory of real property. Based
on the facility categories of each Military Department, the RPCS provides a multi-tiered structure that
groups facilities with similar functions to allow consistent macro-level analysis and planning.
